Calm within Coalition!
Mufti Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad
After hectic political activity that pulled down from
grace the party stalwart, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, PDP once again is gripped
by an uneasy calm, which may explode like a gelatin bomb breaking the body
structure of the party in splinters. Though it is claimed that the party
has emerged stronger after Baig episode, yet the reality is not this. By
keeping both Baig and his sworn enemy Mir at an equal length, Mufti might
have managed to save the party from disintegration, but this is a
transitory period, which may not help Mufti in the long run.
Both
Mir and Baig have been the founding members of PDP who worked together as
long as the party was in its formative stage. But once it captured power,
differences started cropping up with Baig coming closer to Mufti. The
climax reached when Baig was made Deputy Chief Minister a position that Mir
wanted to occupy.
In the meantime, Dr.
Ghulam Nabi Lone a junior Minister of PDP in the coalition Government was
assassinated. Mir wanted to get the case probed as intelligence agencies
had described the assassination as a result of ‘security lapse’.
This created a row between Mir and Mufti because this was a direct
attack on Mufti Sayeed who besides being the Chief Minister was the State
Home Minister as well, thereby making comfortable the position of Baig who
according to party sources pampered the party high command to take
disciplinary action against Mir so as to get rid of him for ever. But Baig
