Importance of being Mir

By: Asgar Magray

Mirs are hot in the news these days. Hassan Mir for shaking the very foundations of Mufti’s bastion and Ahmed Mir and Ashraf Mir for painting coal tar on the face of Congress and police respectively by being named as accused in the notorious flesh trade racket. However, my topic of discussion right now is PDP and its rebel leader Ghulam Hassan Mir who claims himself as not only the founder member of the party, but also as its real face. He is in the news ever since his ‘Shagird’ as he claims was made the Deputy Chief Minister against his wishes. His revolt on this account made him popular within the party because like him many others did not like Baig being the blue eyed boy of the party high command due to his autocratic style of functioning. According to them, he does not mix-up with the party workers. To avoid them he makes use of his migraine syndrome. And if somebody is lucky to have his ‘darshans’, he is bound to curse the moment he was given the appointment because the insult that he had to pocket during the meeting would not be forgettable. And for this also, Baig would very cleverly blame his ‘head ache’.  “I lose temper when-ever I am under the attack”. On the other hand, Mir is a thorough public man. He has reached his present position after traversing a long distance of political journey. He is from the grass root level and feels happy to be among the workers. Certainly, he is more valuable for PDP, than Mr. Baig has been. Had this not been the case, Mufti Sayeed wouldn’t have been trying to go for a truce with Mir immediately after he was expelled from PDP for his ‘anti-party’ activities. Today, Mir is a force to reckon with. He has a fairly good number of original party workers with him besides being supported by many legislators, which proves that the party high command cannot afford any confrontation with him. Time has come when Muftis will have to choose between genuine and self styled leaders. If they decide to own Mir, they will have to leave arrogant men like Baig and if they decide otherwise, they will have to meet a waterloo, which the party cannot afford. Unlike his daughter, Mufti Sayeed is a seasoned politician. He has already seen the writing on the wall though Mehbooba is still adamant. How he plays his cards only time will tell, but one thing is sure to say that PDP is going to face a turbulent time waiting for her if Mufti Sayeed does not exert and Mehbooba does not change.

Where vigilance and corruption go together

By -Arun Jamwal

Experts claim that corruption and anti-corruption cannot go together, but in case of Jammu and Kashmir, the saying holds no good. What holds good here is the saying ‘Choor Pe Moor’ that fits into the bill perhaps in the most accurate manner.

Crime is allowed to prosper first and then noose tightened around the culprit to squeeze him of whatever he has looted from others throughout his service career. Attachment of Girdawar’s Property in Udhampur being the latest example of that.

Reportedly, the said Girdawar had amassed property worth crores of rupees by using ( misusing) his official position. True, but what had the Vigilance Organisation been doing till the man became rich by owning illegal property worth crores and was the game of ‘Choor Pe Moor’ not going on between the said Girdawar and the Vigilance sleuths? These are some questions that lurk in the minds of common people confirming thereby that in their eyes the Vigilance itself is neck deep in the loot process and that it is not an organization of honest men and women.

Any way, if the Vigilance Organisation has finally nabbed the culprit their action  must be appreciated, but how many years it would require to nab thousands of such culprits who have been playing havoc with the economy and social system of the Nation?

Take for example the ever deteriorating economy of the Power Development Department. The use of Power is more than what the amount of revenue is realized. But who is to be blamed for it except the department itself? If you want to install an AC to beat the scorching heat in a legal manner, you are handed over a long list of formalities to be observed. But if you approach the authorities (the lowest one in the hierarcy) for installing it ‘privately’ you can get the job done within hours. Not only this, you are given a benefit of fifty percent discount also. Certainly, the practice does not go ahead without the connivance of the officers. Everybody including the Vigilance Organization sleuths knows this, but they have also to install ACs at concessional rates!

Our legal system is also not very effective. It is more eager to give benefit of doubt to the culprit rather than to punish him. The lengthy process ensures that justice delayed is justice denied. The law breakers are well aware of these weaknesses and therefore make their full use to avoid a possible sentence.

Time has proved that corrupt and the anticorruption sleuths are chips of the same block. They are rather complementary to each other and therefore cannot survive without each other. The only effective thing to burst the ugly nexus is the legal system. Unless it is given a new shape, the ugly game of Chor Sepoy will continue and the number of corrupt will go on an ever increasing spree.

Opposing Save Doda Campaign

By Sudhir Rathore

Doda is a militancy infested and communally sensitive district. The ratio of population between Hindus and Muslims being almost fifty: fifty, both the communities are aggressive against each other though they exhibit extreme solidarity when they are outside the district. Muslims by and large are influenced by Azad Kashmir Radio and Pak TV whereas Hindus are sworn Indians. The conflict of ideology can therefore be often seen with sporadic clashes in schools and colleges. The on going militancy has added vigor to the conflict with militants supporting the anti-national element ensuring ‘victory’ of their supporters at the gun point.   But the nationalists too have proved themselves as hard nuts to crack and it may be because of this fact that despite massacre after massacre of minority community members at the hands of militants, they have refused to leave their birth place though some stray cases of migration have taken place.

The situation has been politically harvested particularly by BJP whose vote bank has considerably increased not only in the disturbed district, but throughout the country where it emerged as largest party in 2000. The unexpected victory can justifiably be attributed to BJP’s save Doda campaign that it had launched when militancy was at its peak during mid nineties. The party is once again trying to create similar situation by highlighting the recent massacre of over 35 innocent people belonging to minority community in far off, Kulhand area of Doda. How far BJP succeeds in repeating the history only time will tell, but militants have provided them an opportunity to reap political gain let there be no doubt about that.

Realizing the sensitivity of the issue, the so called secular parties have joined hands to oppose BJP’s recently launched Save Doda campaign terming it divisive and communal. But how far they are justified, that needs to have a thorough study.

In Doda, there still exist some areas where Hindus are not allowed to perform their rituals in their traditional way. Even when gruesome massacres of minority community members are done by the militants, the members of the majority community not only keep mum, but also celebrate the blood shed privately. The brotherhood of the so called secularists touches climax when militants are killed while crossing the LoC, the houses of the minority community are targeted. Why? Do the so called secularists have any answer?

In the wake of the recent mass killing in Kulhand, some members of the minority community were sitting on a protest Dharna demanding security for them, which is their fundamental right. But instead of sympathizing with them a mob comprising of the so called peace lovers attacked the processionists and beat them black and blue. And now, same people are calling for brotherhood! Why this change of attitude? The so called secularists can better explain.

To me it appears that by organizing ‘peace rallies’ the antinational element wants to blunt the ‘anger’ of the affected community by posing themselves as anti militants. They are opposing the BJP unequivocally because they do not want any body to come to the rescue of Hindus so that they have no option than to leave their birth place and leave the hilly district to become a safe sanctuary for the anti national elements.

The situation is taking an ugly turn. The coming bloody events have started casting their shadows. The alarm bells are ringing. Cursing BJP because it is coming to the rescue of the minority community will not help. The real elements to be cursed are the hypocrites, the so- called secularists and the politically motivated soldiers of brotherhood. They are the real enemies of peace, harmony and brotherhood and not the BJP or the Jamat whose agenda whatsoever it may be is an open secret.
