Keep secrecy about change in oil prices

In the recent past, a new but improper trend has emerged that Union government through its Petroleum Minister or other functionary reveals its intentions for change in fuel-prices. It was done by Murli Deora on 10.01.2009 and he is doing it even now. During the recent strike by public-sector oil-companies, oil-stock finished earlier at petrol-pumps only because oil-dealers were not maintaining stock in full capacity in view of declining oil-prices as indicated by government-functionaries.

Any change in prices should be affected without giving any pre-indication. Further consensus of having same structure of local-taxes amongst states should be achieved for such products to have their prices uniform all over the country. It is unfair to have prices of oil-products varying vastly in different states.

Abolish NGOs

Siphoning of government-funds for Non-Government-Organisations (NGOs) by influential ones in political and bureaucratic circles run in name of their family-members is quite common. These NGOs pay lucrative salaries and perks to its officers who are either relation to powerful politicians and bureaucrats, or of persons running these NGOs. Practice of NGOs need to be discontinued also because these are tools to divert foreign-funds of individuals.

Buildings built on land allotted on concessional rates to NGOs should become government-property because of large-scale funding already done to these NGOs by the government.

Why Shibu Sonren Not Resign Instantly?

By keeping himself glued to Chief ministerial chair even after losing assembly-election Shibu Soren has already set a bad precedent of political immorality. It is rarest of rare examples that a Chief Minister has been seeking election after election to retain the post even after losing the first one.

Shibu Soren is among those politicians who keep all options open to furthering their selfish interest even at cost of public-money. He did not resign his Lok Sabha seat even after taking oath as state Chief Minister. Rules should be simplified and corrected so that a sitting MP/MLA may have to compulsorily resign from his/her earlier seat before filing nomination for the next election. Also a person appointed as minister (or Chief Minister) in a state may automatically lose his/her Parliamentary membership just on taking ministerial oath. Likewise an MLA may lose his/her assembly seat on taking ministerial oath at the Centre.

Ram Naam Satyam

Confessional fraud by Satyam chairman B Ramalinga Raju about India’s biggest corporate fraud amounting to rupees 7000 crores including non-existing cash should be an eye-opener for both government and the public. Many other public-limited companies may be projecting untrue profits in their balance-sheets not only for procuring or maintaining bank-loans, but also to keep their share-prices high for multiple purposes. Large turn-over and higher share-price entitles companies to obtain SEBI permission for floating new issue of shares to collect more funds from the investors.

It was regretting that no instant arrest of Satyam chairman was made. Our system is tailor-stitched to suit rich and influential who can buy the ‘system’ through costly lawyers capable to utilise loopholes in law to save their fraud clients. Government and other concerned agencies like SEBI should take unpleasant Satyam disclosure as a test case to plug loopholes by grilling all the concerned ones including auditors of the company. Remedial measures should be immediately announced in a manner that all public-limited companies may have to file a true projection of companies’ finances and balance-sheets for every financial year. Stringent measures should be initiated to check big cash-transactions so that such heavy untrue cash balances in balance-sheets may not be practically possible. Government should launch a massive public-awareness campaign to guide public to modify clauses in mutual funds for safe options rather than to opt for gambling and other highly volatile options to invest in share-market.
