Headlines Governor visits SKUAST-J Vohra emphasizes fruit, vegetable, mushroon cultivation; livestock-poultry production JAMMU: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, today called for area specific research on vegetable cultivation, saying that investment in this sector is necessary for optimum growth in a vegetable-deficit State like Jammu and Kashmir. Interacting with the Vice Chancellor, Deans and senior Faculty of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences at Chatha, near here this morning, the Governor emphasized the need for focused attention on vegetable research to ensure optimum production for meeting the domestic requirements. The Governor exhorted the scientists to undertake research on various aspects of major vegetable crops in order to improve existing varieties and standardize production techniques. Mr Vohra observed that the State was importing vegetables from various other parts of the country and "there is also need for undertaking time-bound initiatives and research for promoting organic vegetable cultivation with minimum gestation period". He stressed the need for drawing an Action Plan for acquainting the farmers on the latest and scientific methods of vegetable and mushroom cultivation and taking the technology to the fields. He observed that the University could perhaps explore close collaboration with other research institutions and marketing organisations and launch joint ventures in this sector. To promote cultivation of superior varieties of vegetables, he suggested establishment of demonstration plots and launching of Pilot Projects. He said that adoption of mixed farming approach would enable the farmers to considerably enhance their earning contributing to achieving self-reliance meeting the State-wide demand for vegetables. The Governor also called for popularizing bee-keeping and poultry and live-stock development, particularly in view of high per capita meat consumption in the State. For this purpose, he observed that there should be very close cooperation between the Agriculture University and the State Animal and Sheep Husbandry departments. He hoped that the University and other line departments. He stressed the crucial importance of the State Agriculture, Horticulture, Floriculture, Forests and related departments working in close cooperation with the University for achieving the objective of optimum production in various areas of agriculture sector production. Mr Vohra also referred to the huge potential for the cultivation of medicinal plants in the State and observed that while considerable research has been done on the herbal plants there was need to intensify the cultivation of these plants as field crops in view of growing demand in the pharmaceutical sector. The Governor emphasized high priority attention to developing high yielding varieties of different crops for cultivation in the State and called upon the scientists to work for speeding up research to evolve such varieties. Responding to the vision of the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, the Vice Chancellor, Professor B Misra, said that the University would endeavour to motivate the farmers for adopting vegetable cultivation during the interval of the two crops a year. He agreed that this experiment could be economically beneficial for the farmers. Professor Misra dwelt on the profile of the University which was established in September 1999. He said that the University was running faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry and post graduate studies. The University has an intake capacity of 363 students per annum. Presently 586 students were pursuing their careers in the agriculture and animal Husbandry disciplines. About infrastructural development, the Vice Chancellor said that over Rs 105 crores have been earmarked for the construction of various blocks in the R S Pura and Chatha Campuses. The Academic Block, Display Gallery, Students Centre, Central Library, Seed Processing Centre and Conference Hall have been completed in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Chatha. The Administrative Building, constructed at a cost of Rs 6.77 corers, is also ready for inauguration. Professor Misra said that the University has the distinction of having a state-of-art Veterinary Referral Hospital and Clinic Complex at its main campus in R S Pura, which is best in the country. He said that this Hospital is providing round-the-clock health cover to live-stock population of the peripheral areas. The University has undertaken Networking and Internet connectivity between its three campuses at Udheywalla, Chatha and R S Pura. The Campuses are fully equipped with laboratories and library facilities for research scholars. The University has also been focusing on the human resource development by undertaking training programmes for the capacity building of scientists. Several training programmes were organized for the field functionaries of line departments apart from regular Research Council Meetings. The Governor went round the Agriculture Museum, the Central Library and various labs in the University and was briefed by the Unit heads about the progress registered in different sectors of agriculture development. Principal Secretary to Governor, Mr B B Vyas was among the senior Faculty members who participated in the presentation on the University.- REPORTER NEWS DESK PDP expresses solidarity with Palestinians, extends support to protests Israel acting against basic tenets of civilized conduct: Mufti New Delhi: Strongly condemning the unrelenting Israeli attacks on the hapless Palestinians, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has expressed dismay over the failure of the World community in preventing the loss of innocent lives in the region. "For the past 20 days, the World is watching as a mute spectator the mass execution of innocent Palestine civilians including hundreds of women and children by the tyrannical Israelis," Sayeed said in a statement today. He said the international community in general and the Muslim countries in particular must take immediate concrete action to prevent further loss of innocent lives in the region. "The international community must break its silence on the Israeli onslaught," he said. "There is absolutely no justification in Israeli actions that cause deaths and injuries to innocent civilians," Sayeed said and added that there is no military solution to the conflict and Israeli attacks on civilians are a brazen violation of the basic tenets of the civilized conduct. He said the continued use of indiscriminate force by the Israelis against the Palestinians would only escalate the spiral of violence in the region. Sayeed said the blockade of a UN-sponsored ceasefire in the region by the Bush-administration has unraveled the worst kind of US double standards on the issue. He said as a responsible and influential secular democratic republic, Government of India could play a crucial role in preventing death and destruction in the region. Expressing solidarity with the suffering Palestinians, Sayeed said PDP extends full support to the democratic protests over the issue. "To protest against injustices against humanity is a democratic right and we fully support such protests against the Israeli onslaught," he said. - REPORTER NEWS DESK Pakistan forms team to probe Mumbai attack Srinagar: Promising to carry out a probe to ascertain whether any Pakistan based militant group was involved in carrying out the Mumbai attack, Pakistan on Friday said it has formed a special team to gather evidence on the terrorist incident that can stand up in a court of law. Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesman Mohammed Sadiq said the issue of LeT or any other group being involved in the Mumbai incident is "presently under probe and inquiry by our concerned authorities". The results of the inquiry will be shared with the Indian government, he added. According to PBI, Pakistan has formed an inquiry team led by the Federal Investigation Agency that will conduct the probe into the matter. Sadiq during a briefing in response to a question on whether Islamabad agreed with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's contention that LeT was responsible for the Mumbai attacks, said all these facts will come to light when aprobe will be conducted. The information received from India on January 5 had been given to the interior ministry for inquiry into the matter. "There is a clear distinction between information and legally scrutable evidence that can stand the test of a court of law," he said. Pakistan has also offered to conduct a joint inquiry with India and is awaiting a response from New Delhi in this regard, he said. -PBI Comprehensive plan for beautification of Srinagar city on anvil: Sagar Srinagar: A comprehensive plan for the beautification of Srinagar city is on anvil which includes upgradation of drainage system, lanes and drains, widening of roads, streamlining the traffic system, revival of Dal, River Jehlum and other water bodies besides providing safe drinking water to the Srinagarites. This was stated by Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar at a joint meeting of senior officers and representatives of the Valley Citizens Council held at Winter Secretariat here today. Among others, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Masuad Samoon, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mr. Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, Chief Engineer R&B, Traffic authorities, senior officers of various departments and President, Valley Citizens Council, Mr. Imdad Saqi were present in the meeting. Threadbare discussions were held with regard to various issues including ban on pasting of posters on walls, removal of encroachments on footpaths, streamlining the traffic system, revival of the glory of the Dal Lake, River Jehlum and other water bodies. The meeting also discussed the measures regarding reconstruction of Information Department building and Green Hotel near Exchange Road. Addressing the meeting, the Minister urged the officers to work with added zeal and dedication for beautification of Srinagar city which is the face of Kashmir. He directed the Divisional Commissioner to coordinate with the line departments in this behalf. He also instructed the Divisional Commissioner to interact with the representatives of Valley Citizens Council and discuss the points raised by them in their memorandum. Earlier, Divisional Commissioner shed light on various projects and schemes taken up in hand in Srinagar. Later, a large number of people also met the Minister and apprised him of their problems. He assured them that their genuine demands would be gradually mitigated. - REPORTER NEWS DESK PNB opened its 34th ATM Srinagar: With its imitative to reach out to the vast section of the people of state of Jammu & Kashmir, India's leading nationalized bank, Punjab National Bank opened its 34th ATM in the state at RESIDENCY ROAD, SRINAGAR. The ATM was inaugurated by Mr. R C Kaul, Deputy General Manager, Punjab National Bank, J&K Circle. Speaking at the function, Mr. Kaul said that the main objective of the bank is to reach out to the door steps of the people & to provide them a hassle free service. He said that this ATM will provide an alternative delivery channel for 24x7 hour banking as customers of PNB & other banks can use this ATM which is tied to National Switch. He informed that this particular ATM is the first of its kind in the valley which dispenses Rs. 1000/- notes. Mr. Kaul said that the Bank proposes to add 10 more ATMs in the state during 2009-10. He also added that entire bank in the country stands networked to CBS platform & Bank also proposes to open 5 more branches in the state during 2009-10. Mr. Kaul also informed that expansion of Agriculture Credit, Trade Credit, Housing Credit, Education Loans & credit for development of Kashmiri Handicrafts shall be the focus area of the Bank in the valley during 2009-10. Mr. Mohd. Latif Mir, Assistant General Manager, Area Office, Srinagar informed that the Bank had carved out a special team for expansion of Credit under KRISHI CARD scheme in Kashmir valley & to begin with, the team is currently moving in all branches of the Anantnag district. - REPORTER NEWS DESK |
