He can make history
Making history is not a big deal because it is the man who makes it. But there is a problem in this case because it would be Sonia and not Omar who would be virtually heading the coalition in J&K!

Omar Abdullah has expressed his desire of remaining alive in the realms of history. Though by becoming the youngest Chief Minister of the State he has already created history, the history he has been talking about must be different that may need something different to do.

Ever since the mankind came in to being, a non ending process of coming and going of people continues. But only a few are remembered by the posterity while others are forgotten. Those who find place in the annals of history have done something remarkable not necessarily good though. If the history has the mention of good people an equal number of bad men and women has also found place in the history. How to achieve his goal Omar might have envisioned some road map, but as a common man let me also put forward the following tips to help realize his dreams:

Learning from past: Jammu and Kashmir has seen many CMs most of whom have failed to make much impact. Omar must fix his priorities on the basis of the success and failures of his predecessors. For instance Omar’s grandpa Sheikh Abdullah had declared to hang the corrupt on the nearest electric pole, but what happened? Over the years the State became second most corrupt state of the country. Ghulam Nabi Azad also had an ambitious plan to curb corruption, but the State rose to number one in the field mocking at the innocent face of the outgoing CM. Whether Sheikh Sahib and Azad were wrong in fixing their priorities or their approach towards such problems was wrong, this Omar must analyze before taking on such chronic problems.

Encouraging criticism: Great men in past have described critics as one’s best friends. According to them a critic points out the weaknesses of rulers providing them an opportunity to remove them well before their rivals exploit them publicly.

Avoiding sycophants: Sycophants are opposite to critics in character. Whereas critics highlight the black spots the sycophants try to hide them till those become pestering sores emitting foul smell.

Owning good things of enemies and abandoning bad things of friends: Omar may consider Mufti Sayeed as his enemy, but the way Mufti had kept under carpet the request of the Amarnath Shrine Board for allotment of land without harming the interest of yatris and smooth conduct of yatra, needs to learn lesson from. Had Azad also decided to follow Mufti’s policy or sought latter’s advice on the issue not only the State could have been saved from acute regional divide, the Congress- PDP coalition would have completed its full term and also secured absolute majority in the recent elections.

Behaving like a General than a soldier: Mufti would attend the office regularly ensuring that his Ministers followed the suit. He would extract work from Ministers and bureaucrats by issuing instructions from his office. Azad on the other hand tried to do everything himself forgetting that a single sparrow cannot bring the spring. Let Omar not forget that the job of the generals is to give command and not fight on the borders themselves.

People and not the officers are the real ears and eyes: Rulers whether democratic or autocratic have preferred to depend on their official CID. But only those who depended on public feed back have proved successful. King Vikramditya is an example of that. Omar should also depend on public feed back. Even seeking suggestions from adversaries could be a good bargain. The officers generally believe in ‘boss is always right’ rule, which makes it difficult for them to give correct feed back. Making history is not a big deal because it is the man who makes it. But there is a problem in this case because it would be Sonia and not Omar who would be virtually heading the coalition in J&K!
