People & Voices BY SUBHASH AGRAWAL AND MADHU AGRAWAL Dynastic Politics Unhealthy trend of dynastic politics in Indian political system touched its lowest ebb when Sukhbir Singh Badal was sworn as Deputy Chief Minister in the Punjab cabinet headed by his own father Prakash Singh Badal as Chief Minister. It was height of disgrace when BJP which always criticises Congress for following dynastic politics, was represented by its top brass including party-president Rajnath Singh and party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Adwani to grace oath-taking ceremony of junior Badal. On the other side, former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and joined SP only because it had agreed to give party-ticket to his son Rajvir Singh who was denied mandate by his own party BJP. If sources close to Kalyan Singh are to be believed, he will have to return to BJP once again because without doing it may not be possible for him to endorse his will that his body be wrapped in BJP flag at the end of his life! Both the unholy episodes reveal the growing trend of dynastic politics in Indian politics to satisfy personal interests of politicians. BJP and Jai Shri Ram BJP President Rajnath Singh has once again recalled ‘Ram’ to help the party in forthcoming Lok Sabha elections after it deceived the almighty by not fulfilling its promise for a grand temple at Ayodhya when the party came to power at the centre! Surprisingly even RSS Chief has now disassociated Sangh-family from owning responsibility to pull down Babri Masjid, the disputed structure! BJP has not taken any lesson from its defeat in recently held assembly elections in Delhi when it lost because it projected an aged and tired person as its Chief Ministerial candidate. BJP may have some chances to win but only if it projects Narender Modi as its Prime Ministerial candidate in the name of development. Interestingly even a Muslim Parliamentarian from the left and some industrialists associated with rival parties have also favoured Narender Modi to be BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate! Criminals as lawmakers Recently a case was reported from China where two persons were awarded death sentence for selling adulterated milk. It is perhaps such punishment that crime rate is minimum in that country unlike in India where criminals generally remain scot free due to unreasonably flexibility in the law of the land. Besides China there are several countries in the world where shopkeepers leave their shops open and unattended in noon-hours because these countries have stringent punishment for thieves. Unfortunately in India, stringent laws cannot be made because even hard-core criminals are at liberty to become law-makers here! Towers of Silence There were reports about hundreds of dead bodies from Parsi community lying in decomposed condition at Tower of Silence in Mumbai where these were traditionally laid to rest for vultures to feed up on. With vultures virtually disappeared from the well, a sizable section of world’s most intelligent but diminishing community rightly raised voice for providing alternate means for cremation, but resistance by the orthodox stifled the genuine voice of the new generation . Although majority of Parsis are concentrated in Mumbai, their scattered population in other parts of the country has no option other than to adopt reformed way of cremation in absence of Towers of Silence. Association for Revival of Zoroastrianism which initiated a timely move to bring non-Parsi family-members into the Zoroastrian to save the community from becoming extinct should persuade Parsis to adopt the respectful method of cremation instead of getting the bodies decomposed in the absence of adequate number of vultures. |
