Health and Nation

Mission 2020 - (8)
By Mohammad Latif Qureshi

Health, education, food and shelter are the major thrust and propel areas for a nation to embark upon on top priority. After propagating the moralistic attitude and inculcating the sense of moral values among the populace in our country, it becomes our duty to think about providing good health, quality education, adequate food and provide required shelter to every citizen of this country. It is not the Government only which can alone achieve success without the participation of the public at large in general and sane, coherent and reasonable people of our country in particular. It is also the duty of the management of these areas at different levels in the hierarchy to put in their extra and redouble efforts in a disciple’s way for the upliftment of the citizens of this country and get a hold of all-round development.
Health of the people of a nation plays an elementary and basic role for making the generation healthy, strong and sturdy. The health is the foundation element of an individual to become energetic, efficient, competent and proficient in his life. The notion of good health starts from the lap of the mother to the end of an individual’s life. A healthy child can acquire high-quality education, grasp values, achieve sky rocketing triumph in his life and ultimately become a responsible citizen of the country. But an unhealthy one always remains unsuccessful in the life because of frustration owing to ill health and sickness. Such an individual neither achieves good in getting education nor attain success during the currency of his life. But the question arises that how the people can overcome the problem at this stage when everybody is suffering with one disease or the other as day-by-day different diseases are blown-up. Recently a new disease namely “Swine-flu” has abruptly germinated from America that has circumscribed and encircled the whole world due to which a huge number of people across the globe have sacrificed their lives. Not only this, the other dreaded diseases like AIDS, Cancer, brain tumors, blood sugar, hypertension and many more diseases have also created havoc among the people everywhere in the world. Besides this the affects of the use of chemical, laser and lethal weapons are worse and it is enormously difficult to control the diseases sprouted on this account. The people are consuming the drugs like food in order to counter the diseases but attest no testimony. The alternate remedy is required to be invented. In my opinion the organic cultivation of food, fruit, allied vegetables and allied food stuffs has to be encouraged and use of chemical fertilizer has to be discouraged.
The CONSTITUTION OF WHO [the Basic Documents, Forty-fifth edition, Supplement, October 2006] envisages that the following few principles are basic to the happiness, harmonious relations and security of all peoples: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief and economic or social condition. The health of all peoples is fundamental to the attainment of peace and security and is dependent upon the fullest co-operation of individuals and States. The achievement of any State in the promotion and protection of health is of value to all. Unequal development in different countries in the promotion of health and control of disease, especially communicable disease, is a common danger. Healthy development of the child is of basic importance; the ability to live harmoniously in a changing total environment is essential to such development. The extension to all peoples of the benefits of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to the fullest attainment of health. Informed opinion and active co-operation on the part of the public are of the utmost importance in the improvement of the health of the people. Governments have a responsibility for the health of their peoples which can be fulfilled only by the provision of adequate health and social measures.
ACCEPTING THESE PRINCIPLES, and for the purpose of co-operation among themselves and with others to promote and protect the health of all peoples, the Contracting Parties agreed to the Constitution and as such established the World Health Organization as a specialized agency within the terms of Article 57 of the Charter of the United Nations[1].
In India though our Government has given special focal impetus to this sector and has created a network of healthcare system yet due to ecological imbalance, pollution of air, water and surface besides smog produced by the factories, vehicles and polythene wastes, different types of diseases are germinated day-by-day.
Moreover, health is the general condition of a person in all aspects. It is also a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism, often implicitly human.
At the time of the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO), in 1948, health was defined as being "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".
Only a handful of publications have focused specifically on the definition of health and its evolution in the first 6 decades. Some of them highlight its lack of operational value and the problem created by use of the word "complete." Others declare the definition, which has not been modified since 1948, “simply a bad one.”
In 1986, the WHO, in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, said that health is “a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.” Classification systems such as the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC), which is composed of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) also define health.
Ultimately, the overall health is achieved through a combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being, which helps in making a society healthy, sound and strong to work for the over-all development of the country.
[1]The Constitution was adopted by the International Health Conference held in New York from 19 June to 22 July 1946, signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States (Off. Rec. Wld Hlth Org., 2, 100), and entered into force on 7 April 1948. Amendments adopted by the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-ninth, Thirty-ninth and Fifty-first World Health Assemblies (resolutions WHA26.37, WHA29.38, WHA39.6 and WHA51.23) came into force on 3 February 1977, 20 January 1984, 11 July 1994 and 15 September 2005 respectively and are incorporated in the present text.]
