COVER STORY Genesis of Kashmir Problem 

 

Ever since dialogue process between India and Pakistan to solve the vexed Kashmir dispute has begun, solutions after solutions have started sprouting. Visibly, two schools of thought are projecting their ‘road maps’ claiming that only their formula could end the stalemate. These include the separatists, and the nationalists. But the two schools of thought are further divided in parts. If Umar Farooq’s Hurriyat claims that its ‘United States of Jammu and Kashmir’ formula was the only solution, Yasin Malik’s JKLF believes in total independence of the State while as Geelani Sahib’s Hurriyat says Kashmir dispute could be best solved under UN Resolutions. And then there are other separatist leaders like Shabir Shah, Aazim Inqlabi, Sajad Lone and a host of others who have their own ‘road maps’. As for mainstream political parties, if National Conference has come out with its Autonomy proposal its rival PDP led by Mufti Sayeed has projected ‘self-rule’ within Indian constitution as the only viable solution of the ‘dispute’. On the other hand whereas Congress has all along been advocating for strengthening of Article 370 that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, BJP, Panthers Party, BSP and host of other mainstream parties have been demanding State’s total integration with Indian Union.
